Wittow

Wittow, also called "wind land", is the northern peninsula of Ruegen. The "Schaabe" is a spit of land which is about 8 km long. It marks the connection to the mainland that was completely formed only in ancient times. It connects the Wittow peninsula to the peninsula Jasmund located in the South. In addition, it can be reached from Bergen and Trent via the ferry Wittower Faehre. Up to the 1960s, a narrow-gauge railway was operating between Bergen and Altenkirchen, too. The most prominent spot of Wittow is Cape Arkona with its lighthouses and the remains of the Slawic temple-castle that was conquered and destroyed by the Danes in 1168 .
As a special attraction, the Schinkelturm tower at Cape Arkona offers wedding services and is thus most Northern registry office of Germany. Since 1997 it has been possible to get married there. 330 couples from numerous countries were counted there in 2005. Tel: 038391/4000 or 4190
